Spriggs Farm, Lt Sampford
At a Glance
Dragon Infrastructure Solutions successfully connected a solar development for Avic at Spriggs Farm, Little Sampford in Essex, totalling 12MW. The new photovoltaic farm covers 74 acres and was designed to be capable of fulfilling the power needs of 4,545 homes, a considerable contribution to the local area. Efficiency estimates suggested the solar farm would make great pollution savings, preventing 6,450 tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere annually.
DragonIS’ team connected the solar farm to the Thaxted Grid, directly by cable, with pilot intertripping. To reduce cost and build time, Avic and the UKPN substation were combined into one GRP building. The land at the solar farm has good solar irradiation and is very flat, so the 3.5 metre high substations had to be built into a lowered area, keeping the visual height to just 3 metres. To avoid flooding on such flat land, DragonIS produced a French drain with a pump and soak system.
