Gas Design Engineer

Management of the delivery of the gas designs of individual projects

  • Produce gas designs that can be constructed in compliance with standards and CDM requirements and conform to all relevant Codes of Practice, Company and industry standards in conjunction with civil design
  • Liaise with clients to determine the design parameters
  • Communicate with the upstream and adopting GT/IGT to obtain design approval
  • Carry out risk assessments for the network type and construction methods to be incorporated into the design
  • Design the network using a design tool such as Gas Works ensuring the correct pressure tier is applied to determine the network routing and requirements for pressure control equipment
  • Liaise with other designers to achieve the most cost-efficient multi-utility solution that is consistent with gas standards
  • Maintain a record of the progress of each design project to include communications, notices and applications (FM153a, etc.)
  • Maintain all design records to include calculations and assumptions made
  • Create and deliver the information required for client awareness of their responsibilities
  • Attend handover meetings and ensure sufficient information is included to allow delivery to work safely
  • Complete variations to designs in accordance with Company procedures
  • Produce cost estimates in line with commercial procedures
  • Support and develop other members of the team to enhance their technical knowledge and experience to undertake small networks
  • Ensure that all tenders and contracts are undertaken in accordance with NERS- / GIRS- specific Operations Manuals


  • Degree/HNC/HND in Gas Engineering or a related discipline
  • Qualified through IGEM to EngTech
  • NVQ Level 4 Gas Network Engineering Management Design Qualification or
  • City & Guilds 5831-80 qualification in Gas Network Design


  • Qualified through IGEM to IENG
  • Experience of working in an ICP/GT/IGT industry
  • Knowledge of the gas designer’s duties under CDM
  • Have a good level of business, environmental, safety, financial, and regulatory awareness
  • Proven ability to work to time, cost and quality
  • SUSA safe & unsafe acts
Hours of Work:
40 hours per week with a 30-minute lunch break
25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays
